I love eating Vietnamese cuisine, especially when I crave food but want to control my weight. Vietnamese dishes are well-known for their rich flavours and a perfect balance between meat and veggies. I’m sure many of you fancy Vietnamese food as well.

The most common Vietnamese dish we can get in Malaysia is probably pho.

Basic pho ingredients are:

  • Rice noodle
  • Sprouts
  • Meat of your choice
  • Onion
  • Basil

Usually, if you order the iconic beef pho the beef slices and sprouts come in raw. However, you will need to avoid raw beef and raw sprouts if you’re having a baby.

Raw Beaf & Raw Sprouts

We all know that eating raw meat is unsafe for pregnant women, but how come you can’t eat raw sprouts? Why so specifically sprouts?

According to the CDC, sprouts can get contaminated easily by bacteria including E.Coli and Listeria that would pose health risks to pregnant women. You could experience fever, diarrhea, stomach ache, headache by eating polluted raw/ lightly cooked sprouts. Noted that when we say sprouts we mean all kinds of sprouts, including mung bean sprouts in pho.

Next time when you go visit a Vietnamese restaurant, remember to ask for

  • Well-done meat
  • Cooked sprouts

We hope you can enjoy everything you crave for safely. Have a balanced diet!
