World Breastfeeding Week 2020 - Healthier Planet

Happy World Breastfeeding Week (WBW)! The first week of August is such a special week for all of us, especially those who are/ used to breastfeed, not only we are raising awareness of breastfeeding, it is also a time to say thank you to every breastfeeding mums for not giving up in breastfeeding, we all know how lonely and tiring it can be. We want to say that you’re not only making a difference to your baby, you are also making a difference to the world.


Support Breastfeeding For a Healthier Planet 

Breastfeeding & Sustainability 

Breastfeeding is an eco-friendly action, you are saving scarce resources and minimising pollution. 


World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action WABA has put up a list of how breastfeeding meets the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  1. No Poverty
    Breastfeeding is natural & low cost, affordable by everyone compared to formula milk. 
  2. Zero Hunger
    Breast milk provides energy and lifelong health benefits to the baby. 
  3. Good Health & Wellbeing
    Breast milk brings positive benefits to both the baby and the mother physically and mentally. 
  4. Quality Education
    Breast milk helps to enhance cognitive development, making children learning-ready. 
  5. Gender Equality
    Breast milk ensures that every child has “a fair and best start in life”. 
  6. Clean Water & Sanitation
    Unlike formula powder that requires access to clean water, breast milk provides everything a bub needs, including water. 
  7. Affordable & Clean Energy
    Breastfeeding requires less scarce energy than producing formula. 
  8. Decent Work & Economic Growth
    “Breastfeeding women who are supported by their employers are more productive and loyal.” 
  9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
    Breastfeeding rooms/ spaces could really support working breastfeeding mums. 
  10. Reduced Inequalities
    Supporting breastfeeding could help with closing inequality gaps. 
  11. Sustainable Cities and Communities
    Breastfeeding mothers need to “feel safe and welcome in all public spaces”. 
  12. Responsible Consumption and Production
    Breastfeeding is eco-friendly that doesn’t create pollution nor require using scarce resources.

    Breastfeeding helps with climate change. 
  14. Life Below Water
    Breastfeeding creates less waste & pollution in the ocean.  
  15. Life On Land
    Breastfeeding has a low carbon footprint.  
  16. Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
    Breastfeeding is a human right matter. 
  17. Partnerships for the Goals
    The Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding enhanced partnerships across sectors.
