Baby's Drool Rash: The Causes and How to Deal With It

Baby’s Drool Rash: The Causes and How to Deal With It

A drool rash, also known as a saliva rash or teething rash, is a common skin irritation that often affects babies who drool excessively. This rash typically manifests as red, inflamed, and irritated skin around the mouth and chin area. Prolonged exposure to saliva is the primary cause as it can irritate and break down the skin’s natural barrier.

The Causes

Drool rash occurs when your baby’s skin remains wet with saliva for extended periods, leading to irritation. This rash commonly occurs during teething, as babies frequently put their hands or teething rings in their mouths, causing saliva to drip onto their faces.

  1. Excessive drooling: Babies may drool excessively due to teething, respiratory infections, allergies, or other causes. When the drool accumulates on the skin, it can cause irritation and inflammation.
  2. Sensitive skin: Some babies have more sensitive skin than others, making them more prone to developing a rash from drool.
  3. Fungal infections: In some cases, a drool rash can become infected with a yeast or fungal infection, worsening the rash and requiring medical treatment.
  4. Irritants: Other irritants, such as food or saliva from another person, can also contribute to a drool rash.

Where can you find drool rash?

The most common area is on the baby’s chin, where saliva can pool and irritate the skin. It can also occur around the mouth, neck, and chest if the baby’s drool soaks through their clothing.

Drool rash can be exacerbated by factors such as teething, acid reflux, or bacterial or fungal infections. It is important to keep the affected area clean and dry and to protect the skin from further irritation using a barrier cream or petroleum jelly.

How to treat it?

  • Wash the affected areas gently with warm water twice a day, then pat your baby’s dry skin with a soft cloth. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the area, as this can further irritate the skin.
  • Apply a protective barrier cream: Choose a fragrance-free cream specifically formulated for sensitive skin to protect against further irritation and promote healing.
  • Use a bib: A bib can absorb drool and prevent it from accumulating on the skin.
  • Dress your baby in loose-fitting clothing: Tight clothing can exacerbate the rash, so opt for loose-fitting garments that allow the skin to breathe.
  • Consult a healthcare provider: If the rash persists or worsens despite home care, seek advice from a healthcare provider. They may recommend topical or oral medication for treatment.

Prevention is crucial in managing drool rash. Keep your baby’s face clean and dry by using a soft cloth to wipe away excess drool throughout the day gently. Regularly changing bibs and clothing can also help prevent irritation and inflammation.
