1. Soft Cheeses

Are you a cheese lover? Recommended by Johns Hopkins Medicines, pregnant women should avoid consuming soft cheeses made from raw (unpasteurised) milk, as raw milk offers a richer flavour. Unpasteurised cheese and milk may harbour listeria bacteria, potentially leading to listeria infection. Women with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to infection during pregnancy.  

Watch out for pizzas!

Some restaurants opt to include goat cheese atop pizzas for its soft texture and savoury flavour. Before placing your order, inquire with the restaurant about the cheese used. Cheddar and Parmesan are safe options to consider. 

You should also avoid feta, Brie, Camembert, blue cheeses and other types of soft cheese as your pregnancy food. 

2. Tiramisu

Tiramisu is a no-no because it’s made from raw eggs. Raw food is dangerous and should be avoided in your daily diet when you’re pregnant. 

3. Mayonnaise 

That’s right, it’s on the no-no list because it is also made from raw eggs. Pick your dressing or dip sauce carefully next time! 

4. Kingfish 

Kingfish or king mackerel is the main ingredient of otak-otak. You should avoid it because it contains high levels of mercury (Hg), which poses a risk to the baby’s brain development.

5. Shark

You shouldn’t eat sharks for the same reason as above. Start looking for alternatives to shark fin soup if you’re really craving it.
